Toolbox for Urban Sustainability.

Last Thursday at St. Anthony’s Church on Grand Street, I caught Skotty from Rhizome Collective speaking about his new book _Toolbox for Sustainable City Living_ that he co-authored with Stacey Pettigrew.  His efforts outline the basic systems that urban city dwellers can modify to conserve resources: water conservation, growing food at home, heating, and composting/waste management, to name a few.

The basic idea is that the city should be the most energy efficient place for people to live since denser living conditions, shorter travel to work, and public transportation exist in urban areas.  However, cities are not currently pulling their environmental weight and much education and information sharing needs to happen, especially in blighted poor urban areas, where other hardships take priority over conserving the resources of the city.
